Babar Azam’s string of humiliating failures continued as he was dismissed cheaply in the first ODI against South Africa. Batting on 23 off 38 balls, the former Pakistan captain miscued a flick shot as Ottneil Baartman beat him with a sharp setup.
In the first ODI of the three-game series, Salman Ali Agha’s four-wicket-haul helped Pakistan restrict South Africa to a 239/9 total in the first innings. Heinrich Klaasen slammed an impressive 86 off 97 balls to steer his team to a respectable total.
The chase didn’t appear challenging at first. However, Pakistan’s top order made a mess out of the situation. Opener Abdullah Shafique was dismissed off a four-ball duck by fast bowler Marco Jansen.
The responsibility to anchor the chase fell on senior batter Babar Azam’s shoulders. He appeared shaky in his approach as Jansen and Ottneil Baartman restricted the flow of runs.
Babar Azam's disappointing form continues!
In a desperate attempt to get a boundary, Babar Azam targeted Baartman only to embarrass himself. The bowler knew that the batter was under pressure, and to force a mistake, he bowled a fuller delivery outside the off-stump line. Babar’s eyes lit up, and they went forward for a flick. However, the surface was slow, and the ball didn’t have enough bounce.
A failed flick shot caught the leading edge to short cover, where Marco Jansen latched a regulation catch to end Babar’s miserable stay at the crease.
Babar Azam, currently struggling to stay relevant in international cricket, is under scrutiny over repeated failures. The latest failure against South Africa will only add to the fans’ frustration, as many call for his immediate axing from all formats.
Meanwhile, following Babar’s dismissal, captain Mohammad Rizwan followed his cue as Baartman cleaned him up with a length delivery that nipped back to the thigh pad. Rizwan was beaten on the front and saw his stumps flying in the air.
