England opener Jason Roy was at his attacking best in the critical league stage encounter of the SA20 League 2024 in Cape Town on Friday (January 19).

Roy, playing for Paarl Royals, hammered MI Cape Town speedster Kagiso Rabada for a set of five maximums at the start of the riveting clash in Newlands.

The elegant right-hander turned the beast mode on against the new ball during the powerplay field-restriction phase and clobbered the opposition spearhead out of the park in his first two overs of the match played on one of the better batting surfaces of the competition.

Relishing the true pace and bounce at Rabada's speeds, Roy gave the ball a full monte towards mid-wicket for a pair of maximums to start off the third over of the Royals innings and then hammered the pacer's rare full-pitcher over the long-on region.

Despite Rabada's first over going for an eye-catching 24 runs, the MI Cape Town persisted with their big-name quick and backed him to eventually come out triumphant in his duel with Roy. However, the right-arm pacer was belted again by the Englishman, who smashed two more maximums during the fifth over.

Always strong down the ground and towards the cow corner, Roy reinforced his strength versus MI's best bowler and put them under pressure right at the start of the game. His enterprising cameo ended soon at 38 off 14 balls, but he laid the right foundation for the Royals to post 172/8 in their 20 overs.

Rabada had the last laugh when he managed to dismiss Roy, but the onslaught did impact the South African star, who seemingly had no safe response while the Englishman entered his six-hitting avatar.
