The Washington Freedom had to face the San Francisco Unicorns as their final hurdle on the way to their maiden MLC trophy win. The Freedom led by Steve Smith won the match convincingly in the end to be crowned as the second champions of the tournament.

The San Francisco Unicorns won the toss in the game and opted to field first. Even though Corey Anderson and his boys had a great start to the match as the got the early wicket of Travis Head, their hopes of restricting the opposition to a manageable total were smashed and squashed by Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell.

The Aussie duo powered the Freedom to a massive total of 207/5 in their 20 overs. The San Francisco Unicorns were depending on their opening duo of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Finn Allen to give them a good start in pursuit of this huge target. However, they were rocked early by Marco Jansen as the South African bowler dismissed both the opener pretty early.

Holland's brilliance removes Rutherford

The Unicorns failed to recover from the early shock and kept on losing the momentum in the game with regular wickets. After they were 30/3 in 4.5 overs, fans and the management would have hoped that someone like Sherfane Rutherford, who is known for his finishing abilities will change the course of the game. However this did not happen as Rutherford fell prey to a brilliant fielding effort by Ian Holland.

On the fourth delivery of the eighth over, Glenn Maxwell bowled a shortish delivery at the middle and leg stump. Rutherford rocked back and pulled it in the air towards deep backward square leg. Ian Holland, who was stationed in the deep ran in from the deep and dived forward to take a stunning catch and send Rutherford back to the hut. This wicket nearly sealed the deal for the Freedom.

Steve Smith and his boys managed to bundle out the opposition for 111 in 16 overs and win the game by 96 runs.
