South African skipper Aiden Markram opened the innings alongside Tony de Zorzi in the first Test against Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, Mirpur. However, Markram’s stay at the crease was short-lived, leaving South Africa in an early setback.
After Bangladesh were bowled out for just 106 runs, the pressure was on the hosts to respond with the ball. They didn’t waste time, as Hasan Mahmud made an immediate impact by dismissing Markram for just 6 runs off 7 balls. In the very first over of South Africa’s first innings, Mahmud delivered a game-changing moment.
On the sixth ball of the first over, Hasan Mahmud bowled a length delivery angled into the stumps at 131.6 km/h. Markram misjudged the line, expecting the ball to move away after pitching. Instead, the delivery went through the gap between his bat and pad, crashing into the middle stump and leaving the South African captain bowled. It was an unplayable delivery that left Markram stunned.
Bangladesh’s Batting Collapse Against South Africa
Earlier in the match, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. However, the decision didn’t pay off, as their batting lineup crumbled. Wickets fell at regular intervals, with Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj picking up three wickets each. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was the only batter to offer some resistance, scoring 30 runs off 97 balls before Bangladesh was all out for 106.
At the time of writing, South Africa are at 23 for 1 in 6 overs, with Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs at the crease looking to stabilize the innings after the early loss of their captain.
