Gus Atkinson made a memorable debut against West Indies last month, and has now started off the Sri Lanka series with a bang as well. In the first Test match at Old Trafford, he drew first blood for England with a big wicket of former Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne.

It was the third delivery of the sixth over and Gus Atkinson banged it short, on off. Karunaratne tried to pull it, but the pace and bounce was too much for the Lankan batter and he only managed to get an outside edge that was easily taken by Jamie Smith behind the stumps.

Sri Lanka Lose Early Wickets

After Karunaratne, Nishan Madushka and Angelo Mathews also lost their wickets and Sri Lanka ended up losing three wickets at the score of just six. Chris Woakes got two other wickets.

Earlier, Sri Lankan skipper Dhananjaya De Silva won the toss and decided to bat first. The pitch is good to bat, but Sri Lanka need to show more discipline and resilience, if they want to post a strong total on the board. England, on the other hand, are being led by Ollie Pope in this Test in the absence of Ben Stokes and have started on a positive note.
