Fazalhaq Farooqi bowls to Fakhar Zaman (Twitter)
Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman stepped into the crease against Afghanistan in the second ODI in pursuit of a daunting 301-run target. The two left-handers employed a counter-attacking approach in their run-chase, taking their team past the 50-run mark inside the first nine overs of the innings.
However, their defiant opening stand came to an end after Zaman was perished by a perfect in-swinging delivery from Afghanistan’s new-ball pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Farooqi undoes Fakhar Zaman’s confident start
Fazalhaq Farooqi, who dismissed Fakhar Zaman in the first ODI of the series, got the Pakistani left-hander again in the second match in Hambantota. Bowling his fifth straight over of the innings upfront, the speedster found the gap between Zaman’s bat and pad to rattle his off-stump.
On-air commentator Rameez Raja even described it a “perfect in-swinging delivery”, as it undid batsman’s settling efforts with a peach.
Zaman’s dismissal at 52-1 paved an early arrival of Pakistan captain Babar Azam into the crease. The batting veteran joined forces with opener Imam-ul-Haq, as the two bat on in their tense run-chase against a spirited Afghan bowling attack.
Meanwhile, the ongoing match marks a must-win one for Afghanistan, as they lost the series opener by 142 runs at the same venue a couple of days ago.
The series itself serves as a testing ground for both sides in next week’s Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The two teams might well come across each other once again at the continental event.
