UP Warriorz spinner Sophie Ecclestone struck in her opening over of the match against Gujarat Giants by getting rid of their well-set opener and captain Beth Mooney.

Ecclestone’s timely strike curtailed a raging 40-run opening partnership between Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt after Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy had opted to field first in match number eight of the ongoing WPL 2024 season.

UP Warriorz overseas spinner Sophie Ecclestone was tasked to bowl the final over of the opening powerplay by captain Alyssa Healy after the Gujarat Giants openers had reached 36-0 from just the first five overs of the innings.

After she was dispatched for a boundary first-up, Ecclestone responded back by trapping Gujarat Giants skipper Beth Mooney the very next delivery. Mooney, in her quest of ‘adventure’ before the close of powerplay, danced down the track to loft the Englishwoman over mid-off, only to end up spooning a simple catch to Grace Harris stationed inside the circle.

Sophie Ecclestone also curtailed the threatening stay of Mooney’s opener partner Laura Wolvaardt a while later as Giants slipped to 61-2 inside the first 10 overs of their innings.

Earlier in the tournament, Ecclestone claimed a wicket apiece in each of her first three outings against RCB, Delhi Capitals and defending champions Mumbai Indians respectively. Her latest two-wicket burst against the Gujarat Giants extended her WPL 2024 wickets tally to five scalps.
