In the 30th match of the 2023 World Cup, Sri Lanka found themselves in a challenging position after being asked to bat first by Afghanistan. With a below-par total of 241 all out, the Sri Lankans were looking for a stellar performance from their bowlers to defend their modest score.

Dilshan Madushanka, known for his ability to extract bounce and discomfort batsmen, rose to the occasion in the 17th over.

Madushanka was brought back into the attack by Kusal Mendis, and he made an immediate impact. In the fifth delivery of the over, Madushanka delivered a well-directed short delivery that caught Ibrahim Zadran off guard.

The 21-year-old batter attempted to play an uppercut but couldn't get it fine enough. Dimuth Karunaratne, stationed at the boundary, displayed remarkable athleticism as he ran in and dived forward to take a sharp catch.

Zadran's discomfort against the short-pitched deliveries was evident, and Madushanka exploited this weakness effectively. With Zadran's dismissal, Sri Lanka had a glimmer of hope in their quest to defend their total.

The Afghan skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi, stepped in as the new batter, and Afghanistan found themselves at 87/2 after 20 overs.
