Indian industrialist Ratan Tata returned to X (formerly Twitter) after a gap of four months to bust fake news circulating around the web involving him. On October 23, a spirited Afghanistan unit upstaged cricketing giants Pakistan in their 2023 World Cup face-off in Chennai.

Soon after Afghanistan's moment of glory, rumours and unconfirmed reports emerged that Ratan Tata would be rewarding a hefty sum to Afghan all-rounder Rashid Khan for defeating India's arch-rivals at the grandest stage of the sport.

The Indian businessman denied such reports and claimed that he never made any suggestions to the International Cricket Council (ICC) or any other cricketing faculty about any reward for any cricketer.

Rata Tata debunks rumors of rewarding Rashid Khan

Afghanistan legend Rashid Khan, who also happens to be a beloved cricketing personality among Indian fans, kept Pakistan's scoring in check during their World Cup 2023 faceoff in Chennai on October 23.

Soon after Afghanistan's win over their continental rivals, reports emerged that Indian industrialist Ratan Tata would reward Khan a sum of ₹ ten crore for defeating Pakistan.

As it turned out, the businessman has himself called out the fake news and urged his followers on X to not believe in any reports unless it comes directly from him. Taking to the microblogging site, he wrote:

“I have made no suggestions to the ICC or any cricket faculty about any cricket member regarding a fine or reward to any players. I have no connection to cricket whatsoever. Please do not believe WhatsApp forwards and videos of such nature unless they come from my official platforms.”

Regardless, a win over Pakistan marked Afghanistan's second upset of the 2023 World Cup, as they had also upstaged defending champions England earlier in the tournament.

Rashid Khan and the rest of his Afghan teammates are now slated to face Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Australia and South Africa in their remaining World Cup 2023 fixtures.
