Veteran Mumbai fast bowler Dhawal Kulkarni, playing in his last cricket match, claimed the all-important wicket of Vidarbha’s opener and star batter Atharva Taide in the morning session of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 final in Mumbai.

Replacing the injured Mohit Avasthi in the Mumbai playing XI for the crucial final, the 35-year-old Kulkarni proved his worth.

On Day 1, he claimed two important wickets, and he continued to trouble the left-handed Taide, eventually getting him out in the ongoing day.

In the 18th over of the second innings, Kulkarni bowled three consecutive dots to build pressure, followed by a perfect delivery on the fourth stump line. Taide, forced into a defensive shot, edged the ball to the wicket-keeper Hardik Tamore. Despite the ball's pace being just 132 km/h, its line and length compelled Taide to play at it.

This dismissal marked Kulkarni’s third wicket of the innings, all caught behind by the keeper.

Shardul Thakur shone with the bat for Mumbai on the opening day at the Wankhede Stadium. After Mumbai stumbled from 81/0 to 111/6, Thakur's explosive 75 off 69 balls, comprising eight fours and three sixes, lifted his side to 224.

With the ball, Thakur dismissed Vidarbha opener Dhruv Shorey leg before for a duck, while Kulkarni removed Aman Mokhade (8) and Karun Nair (0), leaving Vidarbha struggling at 24/3 on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy 2024 final.

Following Kulkarni's dismissal of Taide, Shams Mulani claimed three wickets as Vidarbha stumbled to 87/7 before off-spinner Tanush Kotian decimated their tail, bundling them out for 105/10.

On day 1, Kulkarni’s Mumbai teammates paid him a guard of honor as he stepped onto the cricket field for the last time.
