The Irani Cup 2024 kicked off with a bang in Lucknow, where Rest of India captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's decision to field first proved spot on, as Devdutt Padikkal's jaw-dropping catch to dismiss Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw stunned everyone. In a thrilling contest, Padikkal’s athleticism and Mukesh Kumar's sharp bowling made early inroads into the Mumbai lineup, leaving the visitors scrambling for stability.

Padikkal Takes A Catch for the Ages In Irani Cup 2024

In the third over of Mumbai's innings, Mukesh Kumar bowled a good length ball outside the off stump to Shaw, who, in typical fashion, went after the delivery with aggression. However, the ball seamed slightly, catching the outside edge of Shaw's bat.

Positioned at second slip, Padikkal reacted like a cheetah on the hunt, diving to his right with cat-like reflexes. The ball appeared to be flying to safety, but Padikkal, defying gravity, plucked the ball with both hands as if pulling it out of thin air. His catch left spectators, teammates, and commentators in awe, a moment that will surely be etched in Irani Cup history.

Prithvi Shaw, who had scored 4 off 7 balls, was left stunned, walking back to the pavilion as Devdutt Padikkal’s brilliance brought the first breakthrough for Rest of India. The catch not only lifted the spirits of Gaikwad’s side but also sent a clear message to Mumbai that they would need to bring their A-game.

Mukesh Strikes Twice in Quick Succession

With Mumbai reeling from Shaw’s dismissal, Mukesh Kumar wasted no time in adding to their woes. Just three balls later, he delivered another beauty, tempting Hardik Tamore—promoted up the order—to have a go.

Tamore’s loose shot ended up in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel’s gloves, sending him back for a duck after just three balls. Like a house of cards, Mumbai’s top order crumbled in the blink of an eye, as Mukesh’s two wickets in the same over left them at 6/2.

At the time of writing, Mumbai has managed to reach 36/2 after 10 overs, with captain Ajinkya Rahane and Ayush Mhatre at the crease.

Rahane, known for his calm under pressure, will be looking to weather the early storm and guide Mumbai to safer waters after the twin setbacks. For Rest of India, the early breakthroughs and Padikkal’s catch have set the tone for the match, with their bowlers smelling blood.
