Cricket South Africa (CSA) has removed David Teeger as South Africa captain for the forthcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024. The decision to strip him of his captaincy came in the wake of his last year's comments in support of Israeli soldiers over the ongoing conflict with Palestine.

CSA officials are anticipating protests in the tournament, which is set to commence from January 19 onwards at Bloemfontein. Several pro-Palestine supporters were spotted at several South African venues during India's all-format trip to the rainbow nation in December 2023 and early January 2024.

CSA to announce replacement soon

In a media statement issued by the CSA, the board claimed they have received several risk updates over potential protests at the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024.

In order to avoid any potential conflict or even violence at the stadium between rival groups of protestors, CSA decided to remove David Teeger from South Africa's Under-19 captaincy.

The South African Cricket Board emphasized the importance of Teeger for the junior national team and claimed that the cricketer would remain an important and active member of the squad. CSA has yet to appoint his replacement and a newly-elected captain is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Last year, David Teeger had expressed his support for Israeli soldiers back when an armed conflict broke out between Israel and Hamas militants around Palestine's Gaza Strip.

The ICC Under-19 World Cup 2024 will commence on January 19 with a Group A game between Ireland and the USA. Hosts South Africa will also play their opening match of the tournament on the same day by taking on West Indies at Potchefstroom's JB Marks Oval.
