The opening match of Lanka T10 League 2024 took place on Wednesday, December 11 at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and the match was nothing less than an action packed thriller. With boundaries and sixes raining, there were also some spectacular fielding efforts that can be photographed for the ages.

The first match was between the Hambantota Bangla Tigers (HBT) and the Jaffna Titans (JT), and it was marred by remarkable bowling performances and exceptional fielding efforts. However, it was the catch by JT's Janith Liyanage who showed HBT's skipper Dasun Shanaka, the path to the pavillion.

Liyanage's Blinder Cripples Shanaka's HBT

JT won the toss and chose to bowl first. Kusal Perera, the opener for HBT, was dismissed for a golden duck. Dasun Shanaka, came in at number three and provided a significant boost to the innings, scoring 51 runs off just 17 balls.

However, Shanaka's explosive inning came to an end in the second ball of the sixth over when he hit Traveen Matthew's short length delivery. After the ball soared in the air, Janith Liyanage, positioned at long-off, ran in and timed his jump perfectly to pluck the ball out of the air. It was a spectacle for the crowd as Janith landed just inches away from the boundary rope, justifying the rarity of the catch.

Shanaka hence, returned to the shed, as he played an impressive innings, laced with 4 boundaries and 5 sixes.

Jaffna Titans Dominates HBT In First Match

Unfortunately, HBT only had Dasun Shanaka as their firepower as rest of the batting lineup collpased in no time leaving HBT reeling at 106 at the end of 10 overs. Traveen Matthew was the pick of the bowlers for JT with figures of 10-4. Dwaine Pretorius, Pramod Madushan, and Mohammad Amir too chipped in with one wicket each.

In response, JT came in with their firepower. Though their opener Nuwanidu Fernando faltered with a golden duck, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Tom Abell, powered the team to their first win of the league with 11 balls to spare.
