Quinton de Kock, who had been in stellar form ahead of South Africa’s all-important World Cup semi-final against Australia, failed to make any impact at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Thursday (November 16).

The South African opener notched as many as four centuries in the World Cup 2023. However, after playing too many dot deliveries against Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, he tried to break the shackles, only to be dismissed after a 14-ball three.

Nevertheless, it was an outstanding catch by Pat Cummins that ensured de Kock’s dismissal and simultaneously gave Hazlewood the much-required wicket.

After opting to bat, South Africa lost Temba Bavuma early in the opening over. Starc and Hazlewood breathed fire in tandem, making de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen's lives uncomfortable.

During the sixth over, Hazlewood bowled a length delivery to de Kock, who tried to go big only to get a huge top edge. Cummins, placed at long-on, kept his eyes on the ball before completing a wonderful catch while backtracking.
