Shreyas Iyer made instant impact on his return to competitive cricket from injury. Leading the Mumbai cricket team in place of injured all-rounder Shardul Thakur, the cricketer struck a blazing half-century, cracking 83 runs from just 52 balls against Himachal Pradesh in the Elite Group C match of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy season.

Shreyas Iyer belted 10 boundaries and three huge sixes in his innings to elevate Mumbai’s scoring rate at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur.

Shreyas Iyer makes a strong case for himself before New Zealand ODIs

Still subject to fitness clearance before finding a place in the Indian team, senior batter Shreyas Iyer struck a majestic 83 from 52 balls with 10 cracking boundaries and three huge sixes against Himachal Pradesh on his return to competitive cricket.

The innings marked his 42nd half-century in List A cricket as the 31-year-old makes a strong case for himself just ahead of India’s three-match home ODI series against New Zealand.

It is worth noting that Shreyas Iyer suffered a nasty injury while fielding in the third ODI during India’s white-ball tour of Australia a couple of months ago. The setback ruled Iyer out of the remaining T20Is of the tour, as well as from the white-ball fixtures against South Africa at home in November and December.

Iyer yet to get a clearance from CoE

Earlier this month, the 2025 Champions Trophy winner was included in Team India squad for the home ODI series against New Zealand, however, he is still subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru.

Nonetheless, the Indian team is set to face New Zealand in the series-opening first ODI match on January 11 later this week at the Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Vadodara. With still five days remaining for the game, Shreyas Iyer’s current form might well indicate that the cricketer is truly back into the mix.
