The Adelaide strikers put in a brilliant show in the fifth match of the WBBL 10 against the Sydney Sixers. The Tahlia McGrath-led side crawled back into the match from the edge of defeat and managed to win a thriller by 11 runs.
The Sixers won the toss for the game and put the Strikers to bat. The Strikers were put under early trouble by Lauren Cheatle and Ellyse Perry. They were struggling at 51/4 within the seventh over of the innings.
Patterson, Prendergast and Wellington took Strikers to a formidable total
The middle order of the Strikers, comprising Bridget Patterson, Orla Prendergast and Amanda Jade-Wellington, showed remarkable resilience and took the team to a fighting total. At the end of their 20 overs, the Strikers posted 171 on the board.
In the chase, the Sixers lost Hollie Armitage early in the innings. But Ellyse Perry and Sarah Bryce stitched a significant partnership and took the team towards the target. It looked like the Sixers would cruise towards victory.
Mushangwe triggered the collapse of the Sixers with the wicket Gardner
However, Aneshu Mushangwe changed the complexion of the game. She started with the vital wicket of the Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner. On the third delivery of the 11th over, Mushangwe bowled a back-of-a-length delivery at the off and middle stump line.
Gardner moved to her back foot and tried to pull across the line. The right-handed batter missed the ball completely as the ball turned in to crash into the middle and leg stump. This ended Gardnder's short stay in the middle and put the Sixers under pressure.
After this, Mushangwe picked up two more wickets, making the game tougher for the Sixers. From a stage where the Sixeers were cruising towards a win, they got bundled restricted at 160/9 in their 20 overs and lost the match by 11 runs.
