A bizarre cricket rule resurfaced during Sydney Sixers hard-fought tussle against Brisbane Heat at the latter’s home ground in Allan Border Field. The unheard moment unfurled during the Sydney Sixers run-chase in match number 49 of the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023 season, when Brisbane Heat spinner Amelia Kerr caught ball from the deep with a towel in her hands.

The on-field umpires took note of Kerr’s act and decided to impose a five-run penalty on Heat, which eventually turned out to be costly for Jess Jonassen’s troops.

Turning up for their side in their must-win WBBL 2023 game, Brisbane Heat conjured 176-7 after they were put into bat first by Sixers captain Ellyse Perry.

Defending the total in the second half of the content, Brisbane Heat skipper Jess Jonassen employed New Zealand-based all-rounder Amelia Kerr to bowl the 10th over of the Sixers innings. In the second ball of her over, Sixers batter Ashleigh Gardner bludgeoned down the ground towards long-on for a seemingly easy single.

When the long-on fielder threw the ball back to the bowler, Kerr with her towel out in one hand decided to catch it at the same instant. The on-field umpire took note of her act and after some consideration, imposed a five-run penalty on Brisbane Heat.
