Cricket is a game of bat and ball but every now and then, a stunning piece of fielding brilliance steals the limelight. Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final saw exactly that as Kerala's Rohan Kunnummal pulled off an absolute stunner to send Akshay Karnewar packing.

Rohan Kunnummal’s Impossible Catch Left Everyone in Shock

It was the kind of catch that makes you rub your eyes and ask, “Did that really happen?” With Vidarbha looking to stretch their first-innings total, Jalaj Saxena sent down the first ball of the 111th over and Karnewar decided to go for a crisp drive.

The ball was travelling but Kunnummal positioned at short covers, had other plans. In a flash, he dived full stretch to his left and grabbed the ball mid-air and pulled off a one-handed screamer. In that moment, even gravity seemed to take a backseat as Rohan Kunnummal hung in the air just long enough to complete a catch for the ages.

Kunnummal At It Again In Ranji Trophy Final

Notablt, this wasn’t even the first time Kunnummal had made a game-changing impact in the final. On Day 1, he had already played a key role, running out Karun Nair for 86 just when the veteran looked set for another Ranji century. And now, on Day 2, he struck again with a piece of athletic brilliance that gave Kerala a much-needed breakthrough.

Meanwhile, Vidarbha who had started the day in a strong position at 254/4 were looking to pile on the runs. But wickets kept tumbling and Kunnummal’s catch made sure the momentum stayed with Kerala. Eventually, Vidarbha folded for 379 with Danish Malewar leading the charge with a sensational 153 off 285 balls.

Kerala’s Chase Off To A Dismal Start

As the dust settled on Vidarbha’s innings, Kerala’s batters walked out with hopes of putting up a strong reply. But Darshan Nalkande had other ideas.

The pacer struck early, cleaning up both openers: Akshay Chandran and Rohan Kunnummal within the first 2.3 overs. At 14/2, Kerala find themselves in a spot of bother and suddenly, Kunnummal, the hero in the field, was back in the pavillion with the bat.
