Pakistan's performance in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has been nothing short of shambolic. Led by Mohammad Rizwan, the hosts have already been knocked out of the tournament and will face Bangladesh in their final group-stage match in Rawalpindi today.
Rizwan-Aaqib Rift Major Reason For Pakistan's Debacle: Report
According to emerging reports, a rift between head coach Aaqib Javed and captain Mohammad Rizwan apparently derailed Pakistan's Champions Trophy campaign. As per Cricket Pakistan, Rizwan and Javed weren't on the same page regarding some crucial selection decisions.
The report claims that Rizwan advocated for Khushdil Shah's selection, while Javed was adamant about playing Faheem Ashraf on his own. Thus, frequent internal clashes among the leaders adversely affected the hosts in the tournament.
Babar, Shaheen, Naseem And Rauf's Place In Serious Threat
Cricket Pakistan has also claimed that the PCB will review the team's performance after the Champions Trophy. In such a scenario, the spots of several senior players, including Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, are said to be under serious threat.
There have also been reports of groupism in the Pakistan team. So, as stated in the report, the PCB would like to build a team from scratch, causing a major leadership overhaul after the conclusion of the Champions Trophy.
Aaqib Javed apparently doesn't want to resign on his own. If the PCB decides to amend the coaching setup, the former fast bowler might be axed and replaced by a suitable candidate.
