The much-awaited warm-up fixture between New Zealand and Pakistan finally got underway behind closed doors in Hyderabad. After winning the toss, the Pakistan skipper, Babar Azam, elected to bat first and hoped that his team would get off to a rollicking start. But contrary to his expectation, the Men in Green got off to a horror start losing Iman and Shafique cheaply for 1 & 14 respectively.

At 46-2, it was all down to Pakistan’s most experienced batters Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam to do the repair job. The duo took stock of the situation and ensured there were no further batting collapses. The Pakistani skipper in particular showed good batting temperament and looked in absolute control of his innings.

During the 23rd over of the Pakistani innings, Babar was one run shy of his fifty. Rachin Ravindra dropped his length back and offered some room to the skipper to free his arms. Babar displayed his deft touch and played a well-timed late cut shot to the vacant deep third-man region for a four. After playing that delightful shot, Babar got to his fifty in fine style thus shifting the pressure back on the Kiwis.

Babar and Rizwan put on a valiant 114-run stand for the third wicket to put Pakistan in a commanding position during the match. Babar’s stay eventually came to an end when he was dismissed by Santner on 80 during the second last ball of the 30th over. Overall, the 28-year-old managed to hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his entire innings.

Eventually, the Men in Green scored a fantastic 345/4 against the Kiwis in Hyderabad.
