In an exhilarating display of extraordinary fielding skills, Surisers Eastern Cape captain Aiden Markram pulled off an unthinkable catch to dismiss JJ Smuts and guide his side to the final of the SA20 2024 season.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban Super Giants squared off yesterday for Qualifier 1 of the SA20 2024 season at Newlands Cape Town.

In a rain-hit game, Cape Town put up a decent total of 157 runs on board. Due to wet conditions, the chasing team, Durban Super Giants, started as favorites. However, dynamics shifted quickly as Sunrisers delivered exceptionally with the ball.

Sunrisers Cape Town bowling unit targeted the powerplay to break the back of Super Gianta's top order. Breetzke and Zorzi were dismissed quickly under the first two overs of the chase, and suddenly, Durban was under pressure out of nowhere.

In the next over, Ottniel Baartman created an opportunity for another breakthrough. JJ Smuts launched a cracking shot off Baartman's short-pitched delivery and aimed it over mid-on for a much-needed boundary.

However, Sunrisers Cape Town skipper Aiden Markram, stationed at mid-on, pulled off a blinder catch to stun Smuts.

Markam was short but regardless jumped to his left and grabbed a one-handed blinder in the air. His jump was timed to perfection. A second delay would have let the ball brush past his hand and go straight to the boundary.

However, the captain had to be the one guiding his team to the finals as the Durban Super Giants were bowled out for 106 runs. The visitors never recovered from the early setbacks and ended up losing crucial wickets in quick succession.

That being said, Sunrisers Eastern Cape have qualified for the finals of the SA20 2024 season with the win over Super Giants. Meanwhile, Durban Super Giants still have a chance at redemption in Qualifier 2, wherein they will meet the winner of the eliminator game between Paarl Royals and Joburg Super Kings.
