Delhi Capitals’ firebrand opener Shafali Verma ran roughshod over Mumbai Indians’ new ball attack in match number two of the WPL 2025 season at the Kotambi Stadium. Opening the innings with captain Meg Lanning in a chase of 165, Verma flayed left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque with a 22-run over earlier in the innings to get Delhi Capitals off to a flier.

The 21-year-old unleashed one six and four boundaries, all in succession, as the Capitals raced to 24-0 in two overs and to 60-1 at the end of the opening powerplay.

Taking strike during the second over of the Delhi Capitals innings, belligerent opener Shafali Verma launched Mumbai Indians spinner Saika Ishaque for one six and four successive boundaries to extract 22 runs from just six balls.


Shafali Verma went on to smear 43 runs from just 18 deliveries with seven boundaries and two scorching sixes. The 21-year-old, however, had her well-set stay at the crease curtailed by Mumbai Indians all-rounder Hayley Matthews during the final over of the powerplay.

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians carted 164 runs from 19.5 overs, with unbeaten Nat Sciver-Brunt alone cracking 80 of those runs off 59 balls. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also chipped in with a swift 22-ball 42 during her 73-run third-wicket partnership with Nat after the early loss of both openers.

For the Delhi Capitals, Australian fast bowler Annabel Sutherland picked up three wickets in the innings at an expense of just 34 runs to initiate a late Mumbai Indians collapse. Shikha Pandey dismissed both openers to finish with economical figures of 2-14 from her four overs.
