Virat Kohli might have had a forgettable run with the bat in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, but when it came to fielding, he once again showed why he is still the heartbeat of Indian cricket. After back-to-back ducks in the first two games, the 36-year-old bounced back in his own way with a pair of sharp catches that etched his name in the record books.
Kohli breaks Jacques Kallis’ record
In the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Virat Kohli pulled off two stunning grabs, first at square leg and later at long-off to move past Jacques Kallis’ tally of 338 international catches. The Indian superstar now stands at 339 catches, placing him fourth on the all-time list for most catches in international cricket.
Only legends Mahela Jayawardene (440), Ricky Ponting (364) and Ross Taylor (354) are ahead of him on the elite chart.
Two catches that summed up his brilliance
Kohli’s first moment of magic came when he showed lightning reflexes at square leg to send back Matthew Short (56) off Washington Sundar’s bowling.
His second catch came at long-off when he held onto a skier from Cooper Connolly (23) off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Both catches showed fans the vintage Kohli who is always switched on, no matter how the game is going.
Australia crumble after solid start
Meanwhile, after pting to bat first, Australia looked set for a big total at 183/3 before collapsing to 236 all out. Matt Renshaw top-scored with a well-made 56 off 58, but the innings fell apart in the middle overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 4 for 39 in 8.4 overs.
