In a phenomenal achievement, talismanic cricketer Rohit Sharma became the sixth Indian fielder to complete 100 catches in ODI cricket. He attained the remarkable feat in the ongoing third and final ODI against Australia at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.

Rohit Sharma joins Virat Kohli on legendary list of Indian fielders with 100th ODI catch

Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma had 98 dismissals as a fielder in ODIs before the third ODI against Australia. He took two catches in this match, first in the slip cordon to dismiss Mitchell Owen off Harshit Rana's bowling and then at the short mid-wicket to get rid of Nathan Ellis. Thus, he completed 100 catches in the format, becoming only the sixth Indian fielder to achieve the landmark.

Most catches for India in ODIs

  • Virat Kohli - 164
  • Mohammad Azharuddin - 156
  • Sachin Tendulkar - 140
  • Rahul Dravid - 126
  • Suresh Raina - 102
  • Rohit Sharma - 100

Thus, as mentioned above, Virat Kohli tops the chart with 164 ODI catches, with Azharuddin, Tendulkar, Dravid, Raina and Rohit following the veteran cricketer on the list. While Kohli has taken 305 matches to grab 164 catches, Rohit completed his 100th catch in his 276th One-Day match. These numbers suggest that both Kohli and Rohit have two of the safest pair of hands, scripting numerous wins for the Indian team with their fielding brilliance.

We have calculated the Indian fielders' catching efficiency in percentage by multiplying the ratio of catches taken to matches played with 100. As evidenced by the above table, Kohli takes around 54 catches in every 100 ODIs, while for Rohit, the efficiency is just above 36.

Talking about Kohli and Rohit's batting outings in Australia, the former has struggled to get going, failing to open his account even after two attempts. Meanwhile, Rohit played a crucial knock in the last game and India would be keen to get the best out of these two during their run-chase in the SCG ODI.
