On Monday, as teams took to the field for Round 3 fixtures of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, one of the teams coming into the match undefeated in the competition was the Abhishek Sharma-led Punjab, who had defeated Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in the first two rounds comprehensively, while their opponents on the day, Uttarakhand were still searching for their first win, having lost to Himachal Pradesh and Mumbai by big margins.
However, what looked like a straightforward result for the star-studded Punjab team, which boasted of IPL players like Prabhsimran Singh, Naman Dhir and Ramandeep Singh, among others, the underdogs outperformed against one of the tournament favourites and got their first win under their belt by 5 wickets, sending shockwaves in Elite Group C. Here's how the game panned out.
Spirited team effort from Uttarakhand restricts Punjab to 269
After being put in to bat first, Punjab got off to a flying start as both star openers Abhishek and Prabhsimran went past the fifty-partnership under 6 overs. However, the duo fell in quick succession under the next 4 overs, which inflicted a middle-order collapse. Punjab went from 53/0 to 111/6 before Salil Arora and Krish Bhagat scored 65(84) and 51(65), respectively, to take the team to a respectable total. The lower-order also chipped in with some runs, and they reached 269.
The experienced Mayank Mishra's left-arm orthodox came in handy for Uttarakhand as he finished with a miserly 2/36 off 10 overs. Jagmohan Nagarkoti also got 2/48, dismissing Prabhsimran and Naman Dhir. All the other bowlers chipped in with a wicket each on the day.
Captain Kunal Chandela's match-winning century clinches a comfortable chase
Despite Gurnoor Brar's early blows reducing Uttarakhand to 24/2 in 8.3 overs, captain Kunal Chandela stood tall and stuck to an end to score his fifth List A century, getting 118(114) with five fours and five sixes to his name. Finisher Shashwat Dangwal was another key contributor at number 6 with his 51(38), attacking the key bowler Gurnoor Brar for 30(9) in his knock to take his team through. Harsh Rana (28 off 35) and Jagadeesha Suchith (28 off 48) also contributed in the middle.
While Punjab captain Abhishek got 2/39 in his 9 overs, it wasn't enough for them to make it 3 wins in 3 matches as they dropped to number 4 in Elite C. Uttarakhand opened their account but remain at 6 with 4 matches each to go.
