In what was a nail-biting encounter in Vadodara, Delhi Capitals beat UP Warriorz by 7 wickets in Match 6 of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. It was another all-round performance from Meg Lanning-led side as they register their second win of the tournament.
Meanwhile, UP Warriorz continues to be poor as they have lost both of their first two matches in their campaign so far.
Here's how the UP-W vs DC-W panned out in Vadodara:
Kiran Navgire came out all guns blazing
After being asked to bat first, UP Warriorz got off to a flying start as they finished the powerplay with 66 runs on the board with the loss of one wicket. Kiran Navgire, who is known for her power game, came out firing and dismantled the bowlers all around the park.
Navgire went on to complete her half-century in just 24 balls, laying the foundation for what could have been a big total for the taking. However, the Capitals managed to make a comeback as they put a break on the run-flow and took four wickets, limiting the Warriorz to 83 for 4 at the halfway mark.
Henry’s late surge propels Warriorz to 166
After getting a good start, UP Warriorz started to fall apart as Meg Lanning and co completely shifted the momentum. Shweta Sehrawat alongside Grace Harris tried to stitch a partnership but were soon halted by Arundhati Reddy, who got the better of the Aussie with a slower delivery.
However, Chinelle Henry came to the rescue as she wasted no time and started to hit from ball one, scoring an unbeaten 33 off 15. Eventually, the Warriorz got to the total of 166/7 in twenty overs. Annabel Sutherland was the pick of the bowlers for the Capitals as she took two wickets, including one of Navgire and gave away just 26 in her 4.
Shafali, Lanning started briskly for DC
Chasing 167, Delhi Capitals came out all guns blazing as both of the openers managed to add 59 runs in the first six overs. Captain Lanning started positively and was the major contributor with 33 off 22 in the powerplay.
She was well accompanied by Shafali, who fell after scoring a brisk 26 off 16. Deepti Sharma tried to put a break on the run-flow and brought back spinners into the attack which to led fall of two quick wickets before the half-way mark.
Kapp, Sutherland takes Capitals over the line
Following the half-way mark, Lanning continued to keep the score-board moving and completed her first half-century of the season. Just when it looked like the game was heavily bending towards the Capitals, Grace Harris got the much needed breakthrough as Lanning had to depart after a well made 69 off 49.
Annabel Sutherland was joined by Marizanne Kapp with more than 9 needed per over. While Sutherland kept hold of one end, Kapp took the aggressor role and scored some crucial boundaries.
Needing 11 off the last over, Sutherland changed her gears and hit two back to back boundaries to take the Capitals home. With the ball, UP-Warriorz should be disappointed as the entire bowling team had an off day, leaving Deepti Sharma who managed to keep things tight and finished with 1/27 in her 4 overs.
