Dunedin plays host to the third T20I [X.com]
New Zealand and Pakistan move to the University Oval in Dunedin for the third game of the ongoing five-match T20I series on Wednesday (January 17). The BlackCaps are eyeing an unassailable lead in the series after winning the first two games in Auckland and Hamilton.
Despite twin victories, however, the Kiwis are in for a forced change. With skipper and batting giant Kane Williamson ruled out following a mini hamstring strain, the hosts will be led by stand-in captain Mitchell Santner, with wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert making a comeback to the side.
Pakistan under Shaheen Afridi have been picking their best possible XI from the current squad but need to punch their weight collectively, especially on the bowling front, if they are to come out triumphant and keep the series alive.
Dunedin Pitch Report
Historically, the track at the University Oval has tended to be slightly dry. However, given New Zealand's intent to persist with flat pitches to make life tough for Pakistan's much-vaunted pace attack, the ground could turn into another batting paradise with a true-bounced surface amidst small boundary dimensions.
It's a strategy that has worked despite pressure on Kiwi bowlers. New Zealand made 226/8 in their 20 overs in Auckland while restricting Pakistan to 180. The hosts then compiled 194/8 in Hamilton but managed to keep the visitors down to 173 all out eventually.
New Zealand have greater depth and more nous of the conditions with the ball, which are two aspects that have gone decisively in their favour against a Pakistan side which is struggling to match to their class.
Dunedin could pose another stern examination of their resources heading into a must-win game in what is increasingly becoming a disastrous Trans-Tasman winter tour to Australia and New Zealand for Pakistan.
