Pakistan batting great Babar Azam, recently relieved from national captaincy, bludgeoned successive half-centuries against New Zealand in the first two T20Is of their five-match away series. While the cricketer listed a sizzling 35-ball 57 at Auckland in the series opener, he scored another 66 from just 43 balls in the following game at Hamilton.

While Babar failed to take his side past the finishing line on both occasions owing to a lack of support from the other end, he did join an illustrious modern-day batting club by attaining a huge milestone.

Babar Azam completes 9,000 runs away from home

Babar Azam, having made his international debut in mid-2015, has so far tallied over 13,000 runs across all formats for Pakistan.

Remarkably, the cricketer made 9,000 of them in away matches for his country, as he reached the landmark figure during his splendid 66-run knock against New Zealand at Hamilton in the second T20I of Pakistan's five-match series in January 2023.

By completing 9,000 runs away from home, Babar Azam became the first active Pakistani cricketer and the fifth contemporary player overall to reach the milestone.

He joined an elite list of modern-day batting legends, featuring the likes of Indian heavyweights Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as dashing Australian opener David Warner. Englishman Joe Root also completed 9,000 away runs in his profile back in late 2023.

With Babar overtaking New Zealand captain Kane Williamson to become the fifth entrant to join the 9,000-away runs club, here is an updated list of the top six active players with the highest number of overseas runs to their name.

Most runs away from home across all formats (Active batters)

  • Virat Kohli - 14,744 runs
  • Rohit Sharma - 10,141 runs
  • David Warner - 9,184 runs
  • Joe Root - 9,096 runs
  • Babar Azam - 9,037 runs
  • Kane Williamson - 8,972 runs

Babar Azam can further enhance his away record and can even go past Joe Root and David Warner's, respectively, tallies through Pakistan's remaining three T20I fixtures against New Zealand.

The former 'Men in Green' skipper will soon be taking the field for his country at Dunedin in Pakistan's must-win third T20I match on January 17.
