Famed cricketer Muhammad Waseem achieved a unique six-hitting record during the 2nd T20I between UAE and Afghanistan on Sunday in Sharjah.

Riding on the back of what was a terrific year for him, the UAE captain became the first-ever player to smash 100 sixes in a calendar year in international cricket. Even the renowned six-hitting names like Rohit Sharma and Chris Gayle have never achieved this feat.

Coming into the 2nd game of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, Waseem already had 98 sixes under his belt and needed two more big hits to complete a record-breaking hundred sixes in 2023.

He reached the milestone during the last over of the powerplay with a big six over mid-wicket off the bowling of Noor Ahmed, as the ball landed on the roof of the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. He smashed another one over the bowler's head and signed off in style with 101 sixes from 47 T20Is in 2023.

Most International Sixes In A Calendar Year.

  • 101 - Muhammad Waseem (UAE) in 2023
  • 80 - Rohit Sharma (India) in 2023
  • 78 - Rohit Sharma (India) in 2019
  • 74 - Rohit Sharma (India) in 2018
  • 74 - Suryakumar Yadav (India) in 2022

Thus, Waseem etched his name in the history books and is the only cricketer to cross the 100 sixes mark in a year. The second in the list of highest international sixes in a calendar year is India's Rohit Sharna, with 80 sixes to his name from 35 matches played in 2023.

The Indian star-opener broke his previous record of 78 maximums from 47 matches back in 2019, which holds the third spot now. Chris Gayle stands some ground behind in the list as the big-hitting Jamaican's best year in terms of sixes came when he hit 59 maximums in 26 games way back in 2012.
