'We Didn't Focus On How..', Nasser Hussain Reflects On Kohli's Performance In 2023

Nasser Hussain identified one great feature of Indian legend Virat Kohli's tremendous run at the ICC World Cup 2023, stating the maestro's technique at the crease was excellent against all opposition attacks.

The former England captain felt mighty pleased as a traditionalist witnessing Kohli dominate the quadrennial event on home shores with a refined technique, which gave the bowlers no loopholes to exploit.

Kohli out-batted everyone else in the tournament and produced a whopping 765 runs in 11 innings, including three centuries with one of those arriving in the marquee semifinal against New Zealand in Mumbai.

The century at the Wankhede was an emotional one for Kohli, who eclipsed the game's Everest and became the highest-ever ODI centurion with his 50th three-figure landmark in hero Sachin Tendulkar's den.

It wasn't the only special Tendulkar record which Kohli broke during the mighty campaign as the great man's able successor managed to also edge past his World Cup tally.

Kohli's 765 runs are now the most produced by anyone in a single edition of the competition after Master Blaster's 673 runs during the 2003 iteration of the quadrennial event in South Africa.

"He had a fantastic 2023 and he had a fantastic World Cup. (For) all the records that he broke and the attention he got, actually what we didn't focus on was how well he was batting technically," Hussain told ICC.

Hussain said the health of Kohli's technique and overall game during the World Cup would also encourage the 34-year-old and inspire him to continue playing deeper into his thirties at the international stage.

"I have not seen Virat bat as well as that. The sound off the bat. In the innings in Mumbai against Sri Lanka, I can name about five innings, but he was getting in such good positions."

"So that is a really good sign for Kohli and India and Virat Kohli fans because I think that means he is in a good mental space and his game is in order," he added.
