'Pakistan Were Never...,' Aussie Great Slams Pakistan After Dismal Performance

Australian Legendary cricketer Ian Chappell took a toll on Pakistan’s Test side for being absolutely poor in the fielding department during the ongoing Test series between Australia and Pakistan.

This has been the case with Pakistan cricket for some time now as the men in green have consistently struggled to grab their chances on the field decade after decade. In recent days, their poor outing on the field, particularly the series of catch drops at slips against Australia, have put Pakistani cricketers under intense scrutiny in social media platforms.

Ian Chappell, who was full of praise for Australian skipper Pat Cummins in his latest feature for ESPN Cricinfo, reflected on the importance of having good fielders to support a bowler in form to get results going in their favor.

Chappell described how Cummins' will to get the wicket of the batter he wants is so well complimented by the rest of the team members by taking all important chances on the field to turn the game on their head.

After the one-sided thrashing in the first Test at Perth, Pakistan came back strong and put on a brilliant show with the ball in the boxing day Test in Melbourne.

Eyeing to level the series, Pakistani bowlers were right on the money and pushed the hosts on the backfoot on several occasions throughout the test match.

However, at crunch moments the Pakistani fielders let the bowlers down as they failed to grab easy catches, allowing the Aussie batters to settle down and steady their sinking ship.

“Pakistan were never noted for their slip catching. A good slip fielder's job is to catch the standard ones and occasionally add a blinder to his resumé,” Chappell wrote.

Chappell didn't hold back and further revealed a harsh reality from the past, stating the reason behind Waqar Younis and the great Wasim Akram having most of their Test wickets in Lbw and bowled.

“At one point, Pakistan pace duo of Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis had taken 60% of their Test and ODI wickets bowled or Lbw. That’s an outrageously high figure and suggests the two fast bowlers knew not to trust their own fielders,” Chappell added.

Australia and Pakistan will square off against each other for one last time in the third Test which is scheduled to start from January 3 in Sydney. Pakistan are yet to win a Test match in Australia since 1995 and despite being 2-0 behind in the three-match series, Shan Masood and co will be eyeing to start the new year on a high with a positive result.
