The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season is still a few months away, but the trade rumours have already picked up pace, with news that Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson could be on his way to join the Chennai Super Kings for the next season. Reportedly, he has urged the franchise to release him, so that he can start trade talks with CSK.
As per reports, the captain of RR is unhappy with the decisions taken by the management last season, and as a result, wants to part ways with the Royals before the 2026 season begins. However, any trade talk with Samson won't be an easy task, since the Kerala batter is contractually bound with RR.
But if RR does allow Samson to enter trade talks with another franchise, how much do they have to pay to acquire his services?.
Sanju Samson's whopping salary at RR
Interestingly, Samson's salary at Rajasthan Royals is INR 18 crore. He was their first retention, and was paid a lump sum amount to continue with the franchise. From 2022-24 season, Sasmson earned INR 14 crore, and his salary increased after his retention before IPL 2025 mega auction.
When Samson joined RR in 2018, the franchise spent 8 crores to acquire him, and three years later, he became their captain.
How much do CSK need to pay to buy Samson?
If CSK wants to bring Samson to bolster their squad, the Yellow Army needs to either pay 18 crores straight up in a cash deal to acquire him. The second option is to either trade players worth up to 18 crores. Reportedly, CSK are interested in a straight cash deal with RR, but the franchise wants a player in return.
RR has expressed a desire to potentially acquire players like Ashwin or Jadeja in return for Samson.
