As the thrilling Ashes 2023 reaches its finale, England and Australia are set to duel in the fifth and final Test at the Kennington Oval in London. This Test has all the makings of a classic, with Australia leading the series 2-1 and England seeking to square the series at two-all after a spirited comeback.

ENG vs AUS 5th Test: Team Previews

England

Following an underwhelming start with two losses due to dubious decisions, the home team roared back into contention in the third Test at Headingley with a victory by three wickets. Their momentum carried into the fourth Test in Manchester, where they had Australia on the ropes, but were denied victory by persistent rains that limited play to only 30 overs on the final two days. The rain-soaked draw leaves England chasing a series-levelling win at the Oval.

Coming to the team composition, James Anderson's form has been a concern for England, casting doubt on his participation in the final Test.

Nonetheless, apart from this potential switch, England is expected to retain its playing XI that performed commendably in Manchester.

Australia

On the other hand, Australia's performances have waned since their opening victories. A subpar third Test outing led to their defeat, while their batters, barring Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne, struggled again in the fourth Test. After short stints from David Warner and Usman Khawaja, Australia barely managed to reach a total of 317 runs in Manchester.

Steve Smith's form, post his century at Lord's, has been lacklustre, while Captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have not been at their best. Australia will need to step up to seal the series 3-1 in the final Test. Newcomer Todd Murphy is tipped to be included in the XI for the decisive match, considering the role spinners play at the Oval.

Pitch Report

The Oval pitch is known to favour batsmen more than bowlers. However, spinners can have a say as the game reaches the final two days. The lack of grass on the pitch might be a challenge for pacers, though the new ball could provide some assistance. The Oval's history suggests an advantage for teams batting first, with 38 wins compared to 29 for those batting second. Therefore, it's expected that the captain winning the toss will opt to bat.
