The T20I series between India and South Africa moved to Lucknow for the fourth T20I on December 17, after India's thumping victory over the visitors in Dharamsala to lead the series 2-1.  However, the do-or-die match for the Proteas faced an unfortunate delay, citing the poor air quality in at the venue, while Hardik Pandya was also spotted wearing a mask to protect himself from the pollution.

While the broadcasters called it a delay due to fog, journalist Nikhil Naz noted the AQI at the Ekana Stadium to be 490, which is considered as hazardous for health. Fans around the country also expressed their disappointment and pointed out the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) poor scheduling of the series, consNorth India's pollution levels during winters.

Here's how the social media reacted to the toss delay in Lucknow.

"Pandya wearing mask should be the defining image": Fans bash decision makers for smog delay in Lucknow

"Hardik Pandya wearing mask and indicating that he would feel itching in this throat due to smog in #Lucknow should be the defining image of #PollutionInIndia, across all of the northern states," wrote @bakarwaar.

Another user called out the broadcasters on calling it a 'fog delay' and corrected them by saying it is smog, which is holding up the toss.

"Toss delayed due to fog? 🤡Welcome to Lucknow, where visibility disappears faster than toss decisions and winter smog plays better defense than half the bowling attacks. Maybe toss a coin indoors next time," said @moringaleaves69

"This exposes the BCCI’s lack of maturity in scheduling matches during the winter season," noted @PhatakAbhijit, while tagging BCCI's official handle.

"Just another masterclass decision by BCCI, having matches in North India during this time of the year is just ridiculous decision," said the furious fan @kapiljaat23

After almost an hour has passed since the scheduled toss time, the upcoming inspection is scheduled at 7:30 pm (IST), where the match officials will decide the future of this match as the players continue to warm up in visibly blurry conditions.
