Tasmania won its Sheffield Shield thriller against a Will Sutherland-led Victorian side at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Defending 270 runs for a win, Tasmanian bowlers wrapped up Victoria for just 249 in 81.2 overs on Day 4 to register only their second win of the 2025 Sheffield Shield season.
Playing for Tasmania, uncapped Australian fast bowler Kieran Elliot picked up six wickets in the decisive innings to complete a sensational ten-wicket haul for the match.
Kieran Elliot enforces Shield thriller with inspired spell
Tasmania’s tearaway speedster Kieran Elliot toiled away for more than 28 overs during the second Victorion innings in match number 19 of the 2025 Sheffield Shield season. Defending just 270 runs for a win, the speedster picked up the key wickets of Sam Elliot, Thomas Rogers, Harry Dixon and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper to run through Victoria’s middle order.
Moreover, Elliot also snapped the well-set stay of Victoria captain and dangerman Will Sutherland, before inducing a leading edge of half-centurion Peter Handscomb (93) to deliver the knockout punch for Tasmania.
Overall, Kieran Elliot picked up six wickets at an expense of just 84 runs in his 28.1 overs to bag his maiden five-wicket haul in first class cricket. The cricketer also collected figures of 4-55 from 17 overs during the first innings to complete his maiden ten-wicket match haul.
Nonetheless, the outcome marked Tasmania’s only second win of the Sheffield Shield 2025 season, and their first since recording a 55-run win over New South Wales back in November 2024. Under the leadership of BBL star Jordan Silk, Tasmania also moved up the six-team Sheffield Shield standings after being precariously placed at the bottom of the points table.
