Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra wants the current Indian team to travel with at least four specialist fast bowlers to Dubai for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. With Jasprit Burmah in danger of losing his spot in the squad owing to his injury, several reports indicate that the Indian team management might rope in recent ODI debutant Harshit Rana as replacement instead.
Apart from Bumrah and his possible replacement, the Indian cricket team for the 2025 Champions Trophy features only two other specialist fast bowlers in the form of Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh.
Aakash Chopra wants Mohammed Siraj in CT team
Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that simply adding Harshit Rana into the national squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement will not be enough.
The cricketer-turned-commentator believes the Indian team management should bring back Mohammed Siraj into the team as the ‘Men in Blue’ should travel to UAE with at least four specialist fast bowlers. He said:
“India will have to change the entire goalpost if Bumrah isn't there. They will have to make a solid pivot because if they don't and believe that simply adding Harshit Rana will be enough, would we really be ready? It just doesn’t feel ready.”
“The Indian team can actually think about taking another fast bowler. They should bring Mohammed Siraj into the team. India should go with four fast bowlers. They should rectify the mistake they had committed.”
Harshit Rana, in line to replace Jasprit Bumrah, made his ODI debut just a week ago with a match against England. The 23-year-old speedster picked up three wickets in his first match, and is averaging 28.75 in the format so far.
Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, played a crucial role during ICC’s previous ODI event, the 2023 World Cup, picking up 14 wickets in the tournament in just 11 innings. Moreover, the speedster also excelled during the preceding ODI Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka.
