Riding on a scintillating ton from Glenn Phillips and a spectacular four-for from Trent Boult, New Zealand swatted aside Sri Lanka by 65 runs in the fifteenth Super 12 encounter of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Sydney. The Blackcaps significantly boosted their knockout qualification chances with this clinical victory.

Phenomenal Phillips powers New Zealand to a fighting total

After opting to bat first, New Zealand had a disastrous start, losing their top order inside the first four overs. However, the dynamic duo of Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell resurrected the innings, adding vital 84 runs for the fourth wicket.

After Mitchell fell prey to Wanindu Hasaranga, Phillips changed his gears and started smashing the Lankan bowlers to all corners of the ground. The swashbuckling right-handed batter belted ten fours and four sixes to slam a fabulous ton that propelled the Kiwis to a defendable 167 at the end of 20 overs.

Kasun Rajitha starred with the ball for Sri Lanka, scalping two wickets for 23 runs.

Lankans crumble as Boult runs riot

Sri Lanka began the chase in the worst possible manner, as Tim Southee and Trent Boult rattled their top order in the blink of an eye. Boult was the wrecker-in-chief for the Kiwis, removing Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka cheaply.

Mitchell Santner dismissed Chamika Karunaratne in his first delivery to push Sri Lanka further into trouble.

Although Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with useful contributions of 34 and 35 runs, it was not enough, as the Lankan lions were eventually bundled out for a paltry 102 with four balls to spare.
