Australia have had a torrid time in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup in India, having lost their first two matches, including a 134-run drubbing against South Africa last evening in Lucknow.

On Thursday, former captain Steve Smith, who is undergoing a rough patch, reached a personal milestone during his knock of 19 runs, surpassing the legendary wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist to become Australia's seventh-highest run-getter in international cricket.

In 312 internationals for Australia, Smith has amassed 15,447 runs as opposed to Gilchrist's 15,437 from 395 outings in the Baggy Green. The 34-year-old has scored 9,320, 5,119 and 1,008 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively.

Former captain Ricky Ponting leads the charts for Australia with 27,368 runs in 559 matches, closely followed by Steve Waugh (18,489), David Warner (17,832), Allan Border (17,698), Michael Clarke (17,112), and Mark Waugh (16,529).

Matthew Hayden (15,064) and David Boon (13,336) round off an impressive top 10 for Australia, coming in below Smith and Gilchrist.

Talking about the ongoing WC 2023, Smith is Australia's second-highest run-scorer with 65, behind Marnus Labuschagne with 73.

Smith's inability to score runs is a problem for Australia, as now almost every game for them is a must-win match, having started the tournament on the wrong note. Smith has a decent ODI record in India, slamming 601 runs in 21 matches with one hundred and four fifties.
