Steve Smith Equals Ricky Ponting's All-Time Record With Appearance In WTC Final

In a significant development, Steve Smith has reached another major milestone in his career. The star batter has equalled the legendary Ricky Ponting's all-time record for the most appearances in ICC tournament finals. Smith took the field for his sixth ICC final today (June 11) in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Steve Smith Appears In An ICC Final For 6th Time

Steve Smith's six ICC final appearances include: 

  • 2010 ICC T20 World Cup
  • 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup 
  • 2021 ICC T20 World Cup
  • 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final
  • 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup
  • 2025 ICC World Test Championship Final (Ongoing)

While Smith has now equalled Ponting’s tally of six ICC final appearances, the record for final appearances belongs jointly to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have each featured in nine ICC tournament finals. After them is Ravindra Jadeja with 8 ICC final appearances and Yuvraj Singh with seven. 

It is also important to mention that Smith has won four out of five ICC finals so far, and with victory in the ongoing WTC Final against South Africa, he has the chance to equal Ponting’s record of five ICC trophies as a player.
