India Women began their T20I campaign in England on a dominating note with a clinical 97-run win over the hosts in the 1st T20I at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on Friday, June 28. Smriti Mandhana led from the front with a scintillating 112 off just 62 balls as India posted a towering total of 210/5. England, in reply, crumbled under pressure and were bowled out for 113 in just 14.5 overs.
Let's take a look at how India made the win look easy:
Smriti Mandhana dazzles with career-best T20I ton
After England opted to bowl first, India got off to a steady start with Shafali Verma (20 off 22) supporting skipper Smriti Mandhana. Once Verma departed at 77/1 in the 9th over, Mandhana took charge alongside Harleen Deol (43 off 23), stitching a game-changing 94-run stand in just 45 balls.
Mandhana showcased her full range, driving through covers, lofting over mid-on, and pulling with power, as she brought up her century in just 57 balls. Her innings included 15 fours and 3 sixes and set the tone for India’s record total at this venue.
Despite a late wobble that saw quick wickets fall, including Richa Ghosh (12), Jemimah Rodrigues (0), and eventually Mandhana herself, India finished strong at 210/5 in 20 overs. Lauren Bell was the pick of the bowlers for England with 3/27 in her 4 overs.
England batters crumble despite Sciver-Brunt’s lone fight
Chasing a huge target, England Women had a disastrous start. They lost Sophia Dunkley (7) and Danielle Wyatt (0) in the opening overs. While Nat Sciver-Brunt kept the scoreboard moving with a fighting 66 off 42 balls, none of the other batters provided any resistance.
India’s bowlers were relentless with Nallapureddy Charani (4/12) wrecking the middle and lower order. Deepti Sharma (2/32) and Radha Yadav (2/15) also chipped in with key strikes. Charani’s brilliant four-wicket haul was pivotal in finishing the game quickly as England lost their last seven wickets for just 43 runs.
England’s innings folded in under 15 overs for just 113, handing India a massive 97-run victory, one of their biggest wins against England in the format. Notably, it was also the biggest defeat by runs in WT20Is for England Women.
