Former India spinner R Ashwin has voiced his disappointment over Rishabh Pant’s avoidable dismissal on Day 3 of the ongoing Test against England at Lord’s. The former spinner even lauded the wicketkeeper-batter for his brave and entertaining knock while batting through pain.
Pant, who had injured his left index finger while keeping on Day 1, played a counter-attacking innings that brought India back into a dominant position after early setbacks. He stitched together a crucial 141-run partnership with KL Rahul, before a moment of misjudgment cost India dearly.
Ashwin Blasts Pant’s Run-Out Before Lunch On Day 3
Attempting a quick single in the last over before the lunch break, Rishabh Pant was caught short of the crease by a brilliant direct hit from England captain Ben Stokes, who ran in from cover and hit the stumps with precision. The dismissal came at a time when India had full control of the session and were poised to post a commanding total.
Ashwin, speaking on his Hindi YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, did not mince words when analyzing the turning point of the session.
“In the last two years, even when I used to watch from the dressing room, I felt like this Indian team has the ability to kill the game. We had that chance on Day 3. KL Rahul was batting beautifully; he looked in absolutely pristine form,” said Ashwin.
"If Rishabh could have gone on to score a bigger score, India could have shut this game down.If India had got 50-100 runs more, I think England would have been under severe pressure. The way Rishabh was batting was unreal. This is what I want from Rishabh Pant. He was looking so solid. He was batting beautifully. The only way he could have got out was run out. He wanted KL Rahul to get his hundred," he added.
It is important to mention that KL Rahul, speaking to the media after the day’s play, confirmed that the two batters had discussed the possibility of Rahul reaching his hundred before the break.
The decision to attempt a single with the session nearing its end has come under scrutiny from several former cricketers, with many feeling that a little more game awareness could have ensured India consolidated their dominant position further.
