Usman Khawaja recorded his magnum opus score while debutant Josh Inglis celebrated his Test debut in style as Australia strengthened its grip over hosts Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the series-opening first Test match at the Galle International Stadium. Australian bowlers also made early inroads before rains halted play to enforce early stumps.

Here’s the timeline of how SL vs AUS panned out in Galle:

SL vs AUS Highlights: Australia Lose Smith, Khawaja Slams Maiden Double Ton By Lunch

Overnight batters Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith added 71 more runs to their unbeaten partnership to direct Australia past the 400-run mark. Smith belted an additional six and two extra boundaries to reach 141 from 251 balls before getting trapped in front by Jeffrey Vandersay mere moments after the Tea break to become Australia’s first casualty of the day.

Smith’s dismissal also brought an end to his epic 266-run partnership with fellow centurion Usman Khawaja for the third wicket.

Khawaja, on the other hand, marched on with debutant Josh Inglis to forge a fresh defiance for the fourth wicket, taking Australia to 475-3 in 114 overs by the time of Lunch break. With Australia extracting 145 runs during the 33-over session, Khawaja notched up his maiden Test double century, reaching the milestone figure from 290 balls.

SL vs AUS Highlights: Josh Inglis Celebrates Test Debut With Record Ton

Usman Khawaja batted out for another hour after lunch to reach 232 from 352 balls with 16 boundaries and a six. His eight-and-a-half hour stay at the crease was eventually halted by a weary Prabath Jayasuriya to end his 146-run partnership with number five batter Josh Inglis.

Inglis, meanwhile, tonked a 90-ball century to record the second fastest hundred on Test debut. Smearing 102 runs from just 94 balls, the Australian number five flayed Sri Lankan bowlers with 10 boundaries and a six.

Alex Carey made a quick 46* from just 69 balls while Beau Webster worked his way around to get 23 off 50 deliveries before falling to Jeffrey Vandersay. Carey’s late fireworks helped Australia mount 654-6d from 154 overs as the visitors hauled their highest Test total in Asia.

For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya and Jeffrey Vandersay picked up three wickets each in the high-scoring innings, but at an expense of 193 and 182 runs respectively.

SL vs AUS Highlights: Sri Lanka Lose Three Wickets Before Stumps

Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann struck in just the second over of the innings by getting rid of Sri Lankan opener Oshada Fernando for seven. Pace demon Mitchell Starc accounted for Fernando’s opening partner Dimuth Karunaratne later in the innings as Sri Lanka lost both its openers by the time of reaching 15 in 4.2 overs.

Senior off-spinner Nathan Lyon also struck with the prized-scalp of Sri Lankan middle-order heavyweight Angelo Mathews as the hosts reached 44-3 from 15 overs before rains enforced early stumps on Day 2.

Dinesh Chandimal and rising star Kamindu Mendis will now resume Sri Lanka’s first innings on Day 3 as they find themselves another 610 runs away from Australia.
