Sri Lanka A overcame their Bangladeshi counterparts in a must-win Group A match of the 2024 ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup at the Al Amerat Cricket Ground on October 22.

Sri Lanka A openers Yashodha Lanka (23 off 21) and Lahiru Udara extracted 40 runs from the first five overs before the former mistimed one off Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby. Following the dismissal of Yashodha, Udara took on the role of an aggressor as he smacked 35 swift runs from just 21 balls with four boundaries and a six.

Bangladesh paceman Rejaur Rahman eventually accounted for the wicket of Udara as Sri Lanka reached 67-2 at the halfway stage of the innings.

SL A vs BAN A Highlights: Rathnayake’s 26-Ball 42 Elevates SL A To 161-7

Sri Lanka A middle-order batters Sahan Arachchige and Pavan Rathnayake shared 64 runs together for the fourth wicket during the backend of the innings to take their team to the brink of the 150-run mark. Arachchige made 30 runs off 25 balls while Rathnayake top-scored in the innings with an explosive 26-ball 42.

Bangladesh fast bowlers Ripon Mondol (2-36) and Rejaur Rahman Raja (2-35) fought back with late wickets in the death overs as Sri Lanka A charted 161-7 by the completion of their innings.

Bangladesh A opener Parvez Hossain Emon smeared two boundaries and two sixes in his 10-ball knock of 24 to blaze his team to 41 runs in less than four overs. Aiming to sustain his explosive beginnings, Hossain was eventually dismissed by Eshan Malinga at the brink of the opening powerplay. His opening partner Saif Hassan smacked three sixes off his own in his 20-ball 29 before he retired himself out of the field.

For Sri Lanka A, Nimesh Vimukthi (1-30) and Dushan Hemantha (3-23) fought back with the key wickets of Mohammad Naim, captain Akbar Ali and Shamim Hossain in that order as Bangladesh slipped to 87-4 in 11 overs.

Abu Hider launched some big hits in the death overs, but his unbeaten 25-ball 38* merely managed to extend Bangladesh A’s pursuit to 142-7. Sri Lanka A ended up securing an emphatic 19-run win to march into the semifinals of the 2024 ACC Men's T20 Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
