On Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Shubman Gill joined an unwanted list alongside Virat Kohli. Gill was dismissed for an eight-ball duck, marking his third duck at home this year. His early departure was a significant blow for India, who were looking to build a solid foundation after being put to bat by Bangladesh.

Gill’s dismissal came in the 8th over of India’s innings. Hasan Mahmud bowled a full delivery angling down the leg side, and Gill, attempting to flick it, edged it faintly. The wicketkeeper, Litton Das, made no mistake, taking a simple catch to his left. This wasn’t a typical wicket-taking delivery, but Mahmud would take it gladly as it put India in a difficult position early in the innings.

Gill’s struggles seemed evident throughout his short stay at the crease. He looked uncomfortable against the Bangladesh bowlers, who consistently targeted his leg side, a strategy that paid off. His departure marked the third time he was dismissed for a duck at home this year, putting him in an undesirable list with Kohli, who had three ducks at home during 2021.

Indian Batters With Multiple Ducks In A Year

With his dismissal in IND vs BAN's 1st test, Gill became the sixth Indian batter to have three or more ducks in a calendar year. The list goes as follows:

  • Mohinder Amarnath - 5 Ducks (1983)
  • Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi - 3 Ducks (1969)
  • Dilip Vengsarkar - 3 Ducks (1979)
  • Vinod Kambli - 3 Ducks (1994)
  • Virat Kohli - 3 Ducks (2021)
  • Shubman Gill - 3 Ducks (2024)

India Face Early Setbacks Against Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s decision to bowl first paid immediate dividends. Rohit Sharma was the first to fall, scoring just six runs. Gill’s early dismissal added to India’s woes, and the situation worsened when Mahmud sent Kohli back for six runs. At the time of writing India are at 97 for 6.
