Conditions changed, but Shubman Gill’s luck with the toss didn’t as the Indian skipper lost yet another coin flip in Test match cricket. This was the sixth straight time Gill had lost a coin flip, placing him on an unwanted list alongside the former India captain, Kapil Dev. The India skipper lost all five tosses in England, and against the West Indies, Roston Chase called it right and decided to bat first.

Gill enters unwanted list after yet another toss loss

Gill entered an unwanted list and equalled New Zealand player, Tom Latham’s record of losing six-straight tosses in a row at the start of his captaincy stint. Interestingly, he went past Kapil Dev, who lost his first-five coin flip at the start of his Test captaincy era in 1983.

The record for the most tosses lost in a row is held by New Zealand's Ben Congdon, who lost a record seven coin tosses in a row. Gill is yet to break the toss hudoo, and will aim to break the jinx in the second Test match.

India's unfortunate toss luck in 2025

2025 has been a horrendous year for India in terms of making the right decisions at the toss. Before the Asia Cup event, India had lost 15 tosses in a row, and the unfortunate journey started with the England series at home. At the end of the fifth Test in England, the Men in Blue had lost 15 tosses in a row, and created an unwanted record. Their embarrassing toss luck included two T20Is, eight ODIs and five Test matches.

However, the toss jinx was broken by Suryakumar Yadav, who called it right in the Asia Cup 2025 opener vs the UAE and elected to field first, as India finally got it right at the 16th attempt.
