On Thursday, India started their first Test match of a two-match series against the West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium. West Indies have won the toss and chose to bat first.
At the toss, West Indies captain Roston Chase announced the playing XI, with Khary Pierre making his Test debut along with Johann Layne. On the other hand, India have gone with three spinners and two fast bowlers for this match.
This is also a special occasion for Shubman Gill, as he is captaining India at home for the first time. Interestingly, India haven’t lost a single Test match against the West Indies since May 2002. In the 25 Tests played between the two sides since then, India have won 15 while the other 10 ended in draws.
IND vs WI 1st Test: Captains' thoughts
Shubman Gill (India Captain): "Yes, definitely. I think we have 4 Test matches at home this summer and we want to win all four of them. Preparations have been good. A couple of days of good practice."
Roston Chase (West Indies Captain): "We are gonna bat first. Looks a good one with a bit of moisture but it's gonna be a good Test wicket.
Looking for the guys to play out and play some positive cricket, don't be timid against this Indian side. Just come and fight for the Test Championship points and go up the table."
