In a significant achievement, Shubman Gill went past Virat Kohli on the list of Indian captains with the most runs in a Test series on English soil. The stylish batter attained the feat during the ongoing Test match between India and England at Lord's Cricket Ground.

Gill Goes Past Kohli With England Tests Heroics

Shubman Gill has had a dream tour of England. Playing at number four, the newly appointed Test captain has showcased exemplary consistency, emerging as the backbone of the Indian batting unit.

The young cricketer from Punjab kicked off the tour with a bang, amassing a glorious century in the first Test at Headingley. He backed it up with two memorable performances, leading India to victory with two mammoth scores in consecutive innings at Edgbaston

Thus, Gill's consistency helped him register more runs than what Virat Kohli recorded on his iconic 2018 England tour. The recently retired talisman had struck 593 runs, the highest-ever by any Indian captain in a Test series in England until Gill overtook his tally.

The Punjab batter's brief 16-run knock helped him go past Kohli and etch his name in cricketing folklore.

Most Runs As Indian Captain In A Test Series In England

  • Shubman Gill - 601*, 2025
  • Virat Kohli - 593, 2018
  • Mohammed Azharuddin - 426, 1990
  • Sourav Ganguly - 351, 2002
  • MS Dhoni - 349, 2014

However, Gill fell just one run short of Rahul Dravid's record for the highest runs for India in a Test series in England. The batter found his nemesis in Chris Woakes, who outfoxed him with an outstanding delivery towards the fag end of the day's play.

After Gill's departure, Rishabh Pant joined KL Rahul in the middle. The duo will resume India's first innings, with the visitors' scorecard reading 145 for three.
