Hard-hitting batter Shimron Hetmyer has been excluded from West Indies' upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, which consists of three One-Day Internationals and as many T20Is.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) named a 15-member squad for both ODIs and T20Is, where the former contained several new players, the latter witnessed the return of veterans - Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers.
Holder and Mayers have only been selected for T20Is as the duo have been permitted to play respective franchise cricket during the ODIs.
The ODI side led by Shai Hope will have youngsters like Teddy Bishop, Tevin Imlach, Justin Greaves, and Kaven Hodge under his win, with Hayden Walsh Jr making a comeback. West Indies have opted to field their strongest T20I side, which under the leadership of Rovman Powell, will see players Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Roston Chase, and Shai Hope also participate apart from Holder and Mayers.
CWI chief selector, Dr Desmond Haynes expects the ODIs to be competitive, and hope T20Is act as preparation for T20 WC 2024.
"On the back of a series win against England, we are expecting our ODI team to be very competitive in Australia. We have some new inclusions, who have impressed over a significant period and a couple of returning players, who we think will have an impact. For the T20I series, this forms part of our crucial preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup where we are hosts. We are hoping to build on strong overall performances against India and England and to keep improving as we approach the major tournament."
The ODIs will be played across Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra on February 2, 4, and 6, while the T20Is will be held in - Hobart, Adelaide, and Perth - on the 9th, 11th, and 13th of next month. However, firstly a two-Test series will commence on February 17 in Adelaide, followed by the second and final Test in Brisbane.
