During the second day of the third Test match of New Zealand’s tour of India 2024 in Mumbai, India batter Sarfaraz Khan bagged the third duck of his international career to become part of yet another batting collapse. The right-handed batter’s third consecutive failure is also his second duck of the ongoing three-match series.

While India lost four wickets in quick succession at the time of writing this piece, the number could soar considering how wickets have fallen in heaps in the series.

Coming in to bat at No. 8 in the 47th over, Sarfaraz’s stay in the middle lasted for just four deliveries as he ended up gloving an Ajaz Patel delivery to the visiting wicket-keeper Tom Blundell. Far away from the pitch of the ball which turned away from him, all the right-handed batter could do was glove it behind the wickets to return back to the pavilion without scoring a run at a time when even a cameo would’ve come in handy for the team.

Playing an international match at the Wankhede Stadium, his home ground, for the first time, one expected the 27-year-old player to leave a mark primarily because of his experience and past returns here. However, New Zealand’s best bowler of the innings didn’t allow him any space to find his feet.

Shubman Gill And Rishabh Pant Rescue India

Resuming the Indian innings post a catastrophic end to proceedings on Day 1, batter Shubman Gill (90) and wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant (60) joined hands for a 96-run fifth-wicket partnership to put the team in a commanding position.

While Pant hit eight fours and a couple of sixes at a strike rate of 101.69, Gill missed out on his sixth Test century. That said, his knock, laced with seven fours, a six and a reprieve, has increased his stature in the format considering the conditions in which it has come.
