India's star pacer Mohammed Shami may be close to making a return to the national team as the selectors rethink their plans ahead of major tournaments. Shami has not played an international match since the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on March 9, 2025, in Dubai.
Still, he could be named in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11 in Vadodara.
A report by NDTV suggests that the selectors are actively considering Shami for this series. Notably, he remains India’s highest wicket-taker in ICC white-ball tournaments, which continues to keep him in the conversation. At 35, Shami is once again under focus as preparations slowly begin for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
BCCI selectors monitoring Mohammed Shami's performances
According to sources, the selectors are closely monitoring his domestic performances. His recent outings have shown strong results, which has improved his chances of a comeback. A BCCI source shared this view with NDTV.
"Mohammed Shami is being discussed on a regular basis. He is not out of reckoning. The only concern is about his fitness. A bowler of his calibre will get wickets. It is wrong to say he is out of the selection radar. He is looking good for the New Zealand One-Day series. Do not be surprised if he is picked, given his experience and ability to take wickets at will. Even the 2027 World Cup is a possibility," he said.
This marks a clear change in approach from earlier months. Shami finished the Champions Trophy 2025 as India’s joint-highest wicket-taker with nine wickets. His last ODI also came against New Zealand in that tournament. His last Test appearance was in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
Mohammed Shami's fitness remains major concern for BCCI
Fitness remains the main concern. Shami has dealt with ankle and knee injuries since the 2023 World Cup, followed by surgery and long recovery periods. This led to caution from the selectors. Earlier this year, Shami openly expressed disappointment after missing selection for India’s white-ball tour of Australia.
Despite missing out on the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, Shami’s current form stands out. He has picked up six wickets in three VHT matches and 16 wickets in seven SMAT games this season. In the Ranji Trophy, he continued to deliver important breakthroughs for Bengal.
